MarkdownMate for Mac uses ⌘, the Ubuntu app uses Ctrl in the same places. Where one app has no shortcut for an action, the cell shows —. In the apps, press ⌘/ (Mac) or Ctrl+? (Ubuntu) to see them in a window.
